PDS is a non site-based integrated work and community living skills program. We promote diversity and inclusion of adults with severe disabilities in Marin County.

PDS provides all instruction and support in the community, six hours per day, five days per week, in gyms, banks, bowling alleys, recreation centers, classes at community college, restaurants, movies etc. Services are individualized to accommodate different needs and learning styles. Our emphasis is on direct-hire, paid (at least minimum wage), part-time employment. Almost all PDS clients are successfully employed at paid jobs. Those who are currently unemployed are expected to participate in volunteer work for other Marin nonprofit organizations.

While our services are known for being progressive and emphasize client rights, natural support, freedom, integration and flexibility, we also provide direction, structure, and consistency and ask all our clients to be liable to us during program hours. Our clients follow written schedules and we strive to know where everyone is and what they are doing at all times. Our ratio is funded at 1:3, but we do enrich this ratio when necessary and possible.

While we serve people of all abilities including individuals with intensive physical and behavioral needs, we maintain heterogeneous groupings. We believe in keeping our program small so we can provide intensive “ family-like” support, and we intend to serve our clients for their entire lifetimes if necessary. For that reason, openings at PDS are few and far between. Typically when considering people for our waiting list we request referrals for individuals who are:

  • Motivated to work
  • Interested in interacting in the community with non-disabled peers, with moral support and companionship from friends with disabilities and PDS staff
  • Able to maintain attendance 5 days per week, 6 hrs per day
  • Have enough residential support or independence to be able to successfully participate in our services
