Title: Help a deaf young man learn to communicate

Description: Pacific Diversified Services helps our clients maintain paid jobs in the community where they can be productive, make friends and live happily. We have a new client from Vietnam named Minh Tien, who is deaf and non- verbal. Unfortunately, due to lack of schooling in Vietnam, he cannot read or write or communicate proficiently with any form of sign language. How ever, he is fully capable of learning sign language. For example, within minutes, he learned how to sign "bathroom". We need help tapping his potential. He is so bright, sweet and charming, and very good at making himself understood through gestures, facial expressions and pantomime. If you are interested in helping him learn to sign, read and/or write, please call or email us. Helping this wonderful guy will be very rewarding.

Requirements: This would be a perfect opportunity for someone who is deaf or knows sign language. You should have a good heart and a sense of humor. Good driving record (no DUIs) and reliable car if you will be driving. No felony convictions. We do background checks.

Title: Teach Functional reading to adults who cannot read

Description: Pacific Diversified Services has about 3 wonderful clients who need to brush up on their functional reading. They will not be able to learn to read phonetically but could benefit from practicing sight word recognition of important words they see everyday on signs, in menus and on the bus etc. We would love to have a volunteer work with these guys in our office for an hour once or twice a week. We will provide the class materials (i.e. workbooks) and refreshments. This will be a rewarding and incredibly valuable experience and you will make a real difference in the lives of our clients.

Requirements: You should have a good heart and a sense of humor. Good driving record (no DUIs) and reliable car if you will be driving. No felony convictions. We do background checks.

Title: Host a party for fun adults with disabilities

Description: Host a party for a great group of hardworking, fun, friendly adults with developmental disabilities!

Our clients all work out in the community at paid jobs and only get together a few times a year when we have a party. They are tons of fun and love to dance, sing Karaoke, play games and sports and eat good food.

We will give you the money to buy all the party supplies and food and we can rent the space. We ask you to purchase the refreshments, decorations and to decorate the space, prepare/serve food, organize activities and enjoy yourselves. We could do this at a recreation center or have the party outdoors with and BBQ, and play games like egg/water balloon toss and/or organized sports. We have done this with a group of students from Dominican college who hosted our Halloween parties several years in a row, and it was wonderful for the volunteers and us too!

We guarantee our clients will be grateful, and that you will leave this experience feeling satisfied and inspired.

Requirements: Volunteers can arrange meetings and "getting to know you" sessions with our clients. You should have a good heart and a sense of humor. Good driving record (no DUIs) and reliable car if you will be driving. No felony convictions. We do background checks.

Title: Office Support

Description: PDS is occasionally in need of office help. We occasionally need people to help with mailings, filing, and clerical duties. Our office is small but friendly and cheerful. We are located in downtown San Anselmo. Sometimes our clients with disabilities are in the office too, and they are fun and make the day more interesting.

Requirements: We do need self-starters. You must be able to read, alphabetize, and to handle large, complex mailing projects. If you have experience doing this type of work it would be a plus. Our office is small so you must be able to maneuver around crowded spaces and organize your duties in a way that is unobtrusive to co-workers who are sharing the space. No felony convictions. We do background checks.

Title: Tax Preparation

Description: Low-income PDS clients who have disabilities are eligible for unearned income tax credit. We have Turbo Tax and all of our clients W-2s in our office, but very little time to help our clients get their refunds. By preparing these tax returns for our clients, you would be helping them get refund checks that they can use to buy something special for themselves. For example Eric, who works at Costco, wants to go to Las Vegas. Another client, Robin, who works at Banana Republic, would love to take a long weekend in the wine country. You can make these dreams come though for them, just by preparing their taxes so they can get these unearned income tax credits back from the IRS! Then they would finally have the extra money they need to treat themselves to a much needed and well-deserved mini-vacation...

Requirements: Our office is cramped but friendly and cheerful. We are located in downtown San Anselmo. Sometimes our clients with disabilities are in the office too, and they are fun and make the day more interesting. But you could also work from home or your own office, if you prefer. We do need self-starters and you must have experience doing this type of work. No felony convictions. We do background checks.

Title: Photographer/Videographer

Description: PDS needs someone to take action shots of our clients with developmental disabilities in the community as they work, recreate and integrate in Marin County. We will use these photos/videos in our marketing and educational materials. We are also interested in artistic portraits of our clients that we could use for gifts for parents, for our holiday cards and for marketing. Requirements: You would need to visit our clients at work and out and about in Marin County to complete this work. You would learn a lot while doing this work and would be rewarded by getting to know some really cool, fun and inspiring folks who happen to be developmentally disabled. Our office is located in downtown San Anselmo.

Requirements: We do need self-starters. You must have your own transportation and be able to show up at employment and community sites on time and unobtrusively take photos of shoot videos. If you have experience doing this type of work it would be a plus. Our office is small so you must be able to maneuver around cramped spaces and organize your duties in a way that is respectful to co-workers who are sharing the space. No felony convictions. We do background checks.
